Summer calls for fun in the sun but beneath it lurks a not so bright subject. This May, Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we are shining a light on the importance of protection & early detection to prevent harmful effects from the sun.

As a sun safe clothing brand deeply committed to promoting skin health and safety, swtorgilde recognizes the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of excessive sun exposure. That's why we are proud supporters of the Melanoma Research Foundation's #GetNaked campaign, an initiative aimed at encouraging individuals to prioritize their skin health and take proactive measures against melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.

In April, we asked our amazing community to share their skin cancer story in any way their lives have been impacted. We are constantly inspired and driven by our customer stories and our own in the swtorgilde Crew.

During May, Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we share these stories as part of our #GetReal campaign. Through these powerful & personal accounts, we aim to ignite awareness, inspire action and foster a community united in the fight against this prevalent yet often preventable disease. With 1 in 5 Americans being diagnosed with skin cancer it's time we #GetReal.

Cancer was the absolute last thing on my mind at 26 years old, living and working in NYC. During a routine skin check, I pointed out a few spots that concerned me and was shocked to discover I had melanoma. One ugly realization came after the next when I learned that my regular lightweight clothing wasn’t protecting me as much as I thought- approximately SPF 7, and that I needed to wear something special called "sun protective clothing." I soon discovered the lack of UPF 50+ options conducive to my lifestyle working in fashion at Seventeen, Vanity Fair & other magazines. I saw this opportunity to make something beautiful & meaningful with UV protective clothing & started swtorgilde! If 1 in 5 Americans gets some form of skin cancer, I figured I couldn’t be the only person in search of stylish sun protection. I know firsthand that prevention and early detection save lives. My problem became my purpose, I've made it my mission to create sun safe AND stylish solutions – swtorgilde.

"My story began when I was 26 as well! I found out I had squamous cell carcinoma on my nose and Mohs surgery was required. This was before there were many doctors practicing this type of procedure, so we went to Chapel Hill. Since then my experience has been one of many skin checks, biopsies, surgeries and sun avoidance. So happy for the new technologies and swtorgilde! Love the colors and designs of this clothing line and appreciate there are others that share stories like mine."

"In 2014 my wife booked my dermatology screening after she had a basil cell removed from her forehead. During my screening, 2 melanomas were found and subsequently removed. This was the start of my battle as over the next several years I had 3 additional non-pigmented Melanomas removed. Early screening saves lives. It's simple get screened and you have a 99% better chance of survival than finding a melanoma too late!"

"I have had 3 spots of melanoma removed in the past 2 years. I live in Florida and avoiding with my active 5 year old daughter, so avoiding the sun is difficult. Cabana life allows me to go to the park and teach my daughter how to ride her bike without fear of further skin damage from the sun. I'm thankful for their clothing and wear it daily!"

"I went to what I thought would be a normal dermatology appointment; however the doctor removed two moles from my back. Unfortunately, both moles came back as melanoma. One being stage 0 and the other being stage 1. Little over a month from my diagnosis I had wide excision surgery to remove the melanoma. Thankfully they were able to get it all and my current treatment is going to see my dermatologist every 3 months. I thought I would never get skin cancer; it didn’t even occur to me. I never tanned at a tanning booth and was always wearing sunscreen while in the sun."

"I went to the Dermatologist for a routine skin check and they did a biopsy of a multicolored spot on the back of my arm. It was in a location I could not see on myself, but when I saw it in the mirror it didn’t look good. It came back Melanoma. Thank God it was stage 0, but still scary hearing I had melanoma. I am so glad I can wear long sleeve rashguards to protect my skin now. Thank you swtorgilde!"

"I found the first skin cancer on my face in 2007 and it was a Melanoma in situ. It's a good thing that I worked for a dermatologist! MOHS wasn’t recommended for Melanoma at that time because the borders were too irregular and the dyes not very good, so it was excised. Since then, I have had several skins cancers and wear sun protective clothing all the time. Unfortunately, the damage was done years ago. My children are very careful in the sun. Educate yours! I had a very close friend, who was a golfer, die of a Melanoma, and a neighbor. While working we diagnosed a 20-year-old Marine Biology student with a stage 3 Melanoma."

#GetReal: Prevention & Protection

"I was recently diagnosed a pre cancer mole on the inside of my leg. It appeared as an unremarkable "freckle". I asked the dermatologist to biopsy it and sure enough it revealed a mole with if left unfettered would turn into cancer. I am committed to doing all that I can in supporting companies like Cabana who take SPF clothing seriously."

"My friend's husband passed away from skin cancer several years ago. It inspired me to start getting annual skin checks. Last year, I had precancerous cells removed. I'm thankful it was caught early."

"So this isn’t quite a skin cancer story, but it is a story about going to the dermatologist for my annual skin cancer check. I’ve had multiple skin cancers cut out and burned off, so I do go faithfully. Last May, my dermatologist noticed a strange pimple on my nipple that she asked to biopsy. It had been there for a couple of years and I had asked at every mammogram to have it looked at and it was nothing. Long story short, she did the biopsy and it came back as cancer, but not the primary site. We needed to go on a hunt for the original site where it spread from. My PCP ordered a CT scan from head to hip and nothing was found. She then ordered an MRI of my breasts and there it was. Missed on at least two mammograms. Chemo, radiation, double mastectomy I am now stage 3B, but because of my dermatologist insisting on that biopsy, I’m alive."

"Two of the closest people in my life have battled melanoma. My mother was diagnosed and had successful surgery 8 years ago, and one of my best friends was diagnosed last year. Additionally, I am passionate about supporting women owned businesses and women leaders. Originally from New York, and now living and working in Gainesville, Florida, I am one of swtorgilde's biggest fans! My children love your swimsuits and rashguards, and I love your prints, your suits, shift dresses, cover ups, and sport shirts. The cabana shift dresses are one of my work wardrobe and vacation staples, and I recommend the brand to everyone that I know!"

"I come from a family that are fair skinned with blonde/ strawberry blonde hair. Both of my parents have experienced melanoma. Unfortunately my father passed away from the result of this skin disease spreading. I had my first diagnosis last fall and was very fortunate to catch it early before it spread. Learned my lesson that preventative care is the best course of action. I share my story with many sun worshipers because a small pencil eraser head spot turned out to be a three inch incision. I was a lifeguard in my teens and I guess baby oil and iodine were not a good 'sunscreen.' I came across swtorgilde a couple of years ago while buying for the golf shop that I work at. I was drawn to them because the owners of the country club/golf course lost their sister to melanoma at a young age. I am honored to partner with swtorgilde and support their mission for early detection and prevention of skin cancer."

"I was in my early 30s when I was diagnosed with melanoma for the first time. My mom was also diagnosed with melanoma around the same time. We both endured our respective surgeries are were given the all clear. Almost 10 years later, my mom was diagnosed with tumors in her brain that were later identified as melanoma. She fought hard with radiation and chemo, but ultimately lost her battle after 3 months. 1 year after my mom passed away, I was again diagnosed with Melanoma. Another surgery and I was again given the all clear. With my family history, protecting my skin, and the skin of my 3 children, is more important than ever. I'm including a picture of myself with my beautiful mom."

"I would love to share this story about my daughter. She is a cancer survivor of 21 years and doing quite well. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 19. Needless to say our lives went into a tailspin – Drs visits, chemo and radiation became all too familiar to us. Moving ahead 16 or so years I noticed a dark spot on the back of her neck which she couldn’t see. Long story short she had melanoma! Never stop looking out for your loved ones. She is doing well – Please wear Sun screen and protective clothing!"

"My Grandmother had a long history of sun exposure growing up on an Iowa farm. As a child, I remember lots of talk of skin cancer and my mom taking her to the dermatologist. As a young nurse, I became her escort to the dermatologist for a number of Mohs procedures to scrape layers of cancer off her nose. She would then endure skin grafts to her nose with skin harvested behind her ears. At each appointment, she would male me promise to wear my hat and sunscreen, so that I wouldn’t have to endure what she did. She has since passed away and every time I put on my hat to go outside, I am reminded of my promise to her. And my goal to keep myself and my children skin cancer free."

"One of the strongest female influences in my life was my Aunt Lorraine. She was beautiful and glamorous and would come up to town and make everything exciting. She did not have any daughters of her own so she always gave me special attention and any time I was told I held a resemblance to get it was a great compliment. My Aunt Lorraine died of skin cancer at age 43 back in the 80's when far less attention was given to prevention. This loss caused me to take my own health seriously. As a fair haired and fair skinned person I began to use sun screens more and be more aware of my time in the sun. Cabana Life has been a great recent addition in my sun protection efforts. "My mother-in-law developed melanoma below her eye. It was so close to her eye they were afraid she lose her vision, which did not turn out to be the case. She let this dark spot go so long that the roots were very deep and required a skin graft from another part of her body. A skin graft on your face is above your normal facial surface and doesn’t totally blend in with your skin tone either. My caution to you is if you see a spot, don’t be afraid to get it checked. Ignoring this spot could develop into something more serious, and invasive, which it did in this case. She survived the cancer, however the grafting never looked right. My husband had melanoma on his nose twice; he has one nostril that is more raised than the other. In both of these cases, the melanoma was cured. Early intervention is key!"

"My mother was a survivor of skin cancer - melanoma. She was diagnosed while in her late thirties and lived the rest of her life - until age 83 - being very vigilant of sun exposure. He survived only to succumb to cancer again a few years later. He became the greatest advocate of sun protection telling all he knew of the pitfalls of unprotected sun exposure. I miss him everyday. The condo association has a dermatology bus that makes stops at the development where people can get themselves checked. She took advantage of this wonderful service and found out when she gets back home she needs to have them taken care of because the biopsy came back positive. She is so thankful for this service and I think it’s wonderful for people!"

"So many of my friends and family members are skin cancer survivors (from my former college roommate who was in her 20s to my grandma). Prevention is important, but I struggle with wearing sunscreen while golfing. I have always hated the feeling of whole-body lotion and sunscreen. swtorgilde's long-sleeve options are my go to!"

"All four of my grandparents and many aunts and uncles have had skin cancer as well as many of my friends. Yes, we are all fair-skinned people. And, yes - we have all been mindful in our lives to protect our skin. But, burns can and will happen regardless of how diligent we are in our lives to protect our skin. I apply an SPF every day, but I still worry about the realities of acquiring skin cancer. I've had several severe burns in my life - one happening when I was just ten years old. It was my first time out of Minnesota and my first time visiting the ocean in Florida. My SPF was not strong enough – and after a full day at the beach I had a burn so severe I had a 103 temperature for a week and had to miss school. Doctors told my parents that this burn would increase my risk of developing skin cancer at some point. With this knowledge I have been mindful throughout my life, but also paranoid with every spot and mole I develop."

"My father had skin cancer and I was told to wear SPF 50 for the rest of my life by my doctor as I'm a redhead. I'm really scared of not applying my sunscreen properly (or not enough of it) so I turn to UPF clothing for help! "In November of 2022 my beloved Dad passed away from Melanoma. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 in October and 6 short weeks later, he passed due to complications of the cancer. The melanoma had spread to 90% of his bone marrow. Since that time, it has been my mission to help share awareness of this cancer and continue the fight in honor of my Dad. Melanoma is aggressive, fast moving and it can be silent. Awareness and education is key to fighting this cancer. It is with awareness that we can be screened sooner. It is with awareness that we can push for biopsies. Awareness allows us to be armed with the knowledge to be able to advocate for ourselves and loved ones. Being aware of the signs of melanoma, early prevention screenings and biopsies are crucial in fighting this cancer. Melanoma has taken away my amazing Dad and left an empty space in my heart. However, I will not let Melanoma win. I will continue this fight and help share AWARENESS in memory of my Dad."

"For May Skin Cancer Awareness Month, I’d like to nominate my mother – Jeanne – who is a three-time skin cancer survivor. My mom is an incredibly strong person both physically and mentally. In 2009, she was diagnosed with melanoma on her left forearm. After a 4 hour surgery and 66 stitches, my mom lovingly refers to her scar as her 'shark bite.' She takes time out of her day to educate local high school biology students on the importance of sun protection and shares safety moments at work by instructing her coworkers how to use the ABCDE method to self-identify suspicious moles. In more recent years, she was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma on her back and basal cell carcinoma on her hairline. Instead of letting this break her spirit, she took every dermatology appointment in stride, even joking with her doctor that she’s survived the 'skin cancer trifecta' and now she feels unstoppable.

In addition to being a cancer survivor herself, my mom has also played the role of caretaker several times. Most recently, when her husband of just one year – Marty – was diagnosed with leukemia last summer, my mom moved 1.5 hours away to be near the hospital Marty was admitted to, and she came out of retirement to ensure he would have proper health insurance as he went through chemotherapy. Prior to that, my mom took care of her father, who battled dementia, for 5 years. Each day she would bring him breakfast, manage his Meals-on-Wheels lunch delivery, and make dinner with him at the end of her workday. And if you asked her if she found it overwhelming to provide round-the-clock care for her dad, she would smile and say it was the biggest privilege of her life.

My mom has worn many metaphorical hats in her life: cancer patient, cancer survivor, caretaker, breadwinner, wife, mother, and most recently Grandma 'GiGi.' While some these roles were easy, she has always maintained her optimism which I think is very admirable. For all of these reasons, I think she deserves to be recognized!"

"My father had basal cell carcinoma and went through multiple surgeries on his head and face to remove the lesions, which took months to fully heal. He's currently cancer-free, and I've encouraged him to wear sun-proof clothing in addition to hats and sunscreen. We've both gotten into better sun care habits and support each other and encourage our family to stay covered, safe, and protected."

"My Mom developed Merkel cell carcinoma at the age of 86, a rare form of skin cancer brought on by sun exposure. We grew up in New Jersey going to the beach as a family all summer long practically every single day when I was growing up. This was in the 50's and early 60's. We had a summer home at a lake in North Jersey and a beach home on the Jersey shore and I will be honest, we used very little sunscreen at that time of our lives. Baby oil was our go to product for a great tan. Anyway, to make a long story short, when Mom developed Merkel cell we had no clue as to the devastating affect it would have on her. It appeared as a lesion on her neck. She spent the last year of her life here with us in Ormond Beach, Fla. having radiation to no avail though, as the merkel cell had spread to other parts of her body. I have become a huge advocate of wearing clothing such as swtorgilde and using sunscreen and forms of makeup with a good UV factor. Ironically, Mom passed away in May of 1997 just two years after her diagnosis. It seems fitting that May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and I hope to honor my Mom with this message. Thank you for letting me share."

"My childhood friend, Jessica, was diagnosed with melanoma during the COVID pandemic. She had a spot on her back that she did not have looked at in a timely manner due to the lockdown. When she finally went to the dermatologist, she was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. At first the cancer responded to treatment. However, she it spread to her neck and she required radiation. Immunotherapy did not work for her and she developed stage 4 melanoma. She was put into a clinical trial at University of Pennsylvania but her results were not optimal. Her oncologist was able to get her into a clinical trial in Pittsburgh. Jessica began the process of having t-cells removed so they could be reproduced and eventually used to treat her cancer. Unfortunately, she began noticing a weakness in her right arm, and after scans, they found two large brain tumors. She was underwent brain surgery and the tumors were removed; however, they found 25 other tumors. She just finished eight rounds of radiation. Unfortunately, her clinical trial was halted by the FDA. Hopefully, it will resume soon. Throughout this nightmare, Jessica has remained her sweet and optimistic self. She has handled herself with more grace than anyone I have ever known. She is married with two teenage children and we are praying for a miracle. The picture attached was taken at a rehabilitation center following Jessica's brain surgery. She looks so good I feel that I have to identify her as the one with the blonde hair!"

#GetReal: A Message From Our Founder on Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month? Read this letter from our Founder about how swtorgilde was started and her thoughts now looking back!

May brings it all back for me.

All of the talk about skin cancer and sun protection, it reminds me why I started swtorgilde. You’d think the 5” scar on my left arm would be enough of a reminder, but when you get so busy with life, it’s nice to get back to the basics of what is most important. To me, that is sun protection.

When I was a frightened 26 year old hearing the C word, and that “you can die from this,” suddenly my worry about having a scar was the least of my problems. Like so many people, I always considered skin cancer “cancer lite,” a little something your dermatologist could take care of.

Well in the summer of 2001, I learned very quickly about the dangers of the sun. I vividly remember the statistics from the Skin Cancer Foundation that shocked me most while sitting in my paper gown:

Your lightweight clothing isn’t protecting you. A lightweight tee only offers approx SPF 5-10 (3 when wet).
One in 5 Americans gets some form of skin cancer before age 70
One blistering sunburn during childhood more than doubles your risk

At that time, nobody was talking about sun protection in clothing, probably because it was only available through catalogs at your dermatologist, and perhaps even more important, because it was downright unattractive (unless you were planning a stroll in the Sahara desert).

When my dermatologist suggested I start wearing sun protective clothing and showed me the catalog, I remember saying, “Does it have to be ugly to work?” He looked at me confused and said, “I don’t know. I don’t think so.” I continued, “Why can’t it be beautiful, soft, flowing, something you WANT to put on your body?”

That’s when the seed for swtorgilde was planted, a sun protective lifestyle brand that would allow me to use beautiful UPF clothing, available via mainstream retailers, to teach people about the importance of sun protection EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Early detection saved my life. Prevention can help save us all. That’s why it is so important to talk about sun protection in May, and always!

My BIG wish for my 49th birthday is to get to know you all better!

I’ve been so busy working to create convenient, stylish, sun safe solutions for you that I haven’t had time to REALLY interact with YOU the way I want to.

Let’s change that!

What are YOUR wishes for new collections? What makes you happy? How do you wear swtorgilde? What’s your story?

I’m kicking off my 49th year with 49 truths so you can get to know me the way I hope to get to know you. Drop me a line at [email protected]. I’d love to hear from you!

So, here's the truth:

1. Yes, I am now 49 (but identify in my 20s or 30s depending on the day).

2. I had a melanoma at 26, scary AF hearing the word “cancer” at that (or any) age. I go for a skin check twice a year, and in the years following my diagnosis it was every 4 months.

3. I have more freckles than I can count, something I HATED growing up because it made me different. Amazing how age quietly teaches you to embrace your differences.

4. Laugh as much as possible, even (or especially) at things that could make you cry.

5. There’s a diamond and gold bar necklace I hope to get for my birthday to wear as a reminder to constantly raise my personal bar.

6. swtorgilde was technically my first baby, I incorporated before my first daughter was even born. I have 3 beautiful kiddos: Devon (19 & sweet), Sasha (17 & sassy) and Branson (11 & the baby). Seems impossible that I have teenagers because like I said in truth 1, I don’t identify as 49.

7. I’m married to a super quirky guy who keeps me on my toes – anyone else get a 6’ unicycle for Valentine’s Day or have a hairless dog named “Sexy” (RIP)?

8. I live in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (grew up on Long Island and lived in CT). I recently bought a country house on 8 acres outside of Charleston as a mid-life or covid-crisis. Even with the ongoing renovations, I love the rural tranquility with the perks of a nearby city.

9. I LOVE my college friends & return to Tulane every year for Jazz Fest (NOLA will always have my heart!).

10. I FIRMLY believe in girls trips – take them often! It’s the greatest reminder of who you are and the energy you need to get where you want to go.

11. I give big cheerleader energy. Surround yourself with people who are genuinely rooting for you and be a cheerleader for all those you hold close.

12. Friendship should be easy.

13. Turn your problems into your purpose – that’s what I did with swtorgilde.

14. My most valuable gain from swtorgilde is my work-wife, now best friend and business partner, Alyssa. We’ve been together 18 years and counting, weathering the ups and downs while laughing, dancing, drinking and hustling HARD.

15. People say I am “lucky” to have swtorgilde, but I know the hard work and dedication of so many that makes that “luck” happen.

16. I love being an entrepreneur (most days).

17. I am questioning at what age I need to have shorter hair, not yet!

18. I often wake up at 4am to capture the early morning quiet hours where creativity runs free (not a great look for my under-eyes).

19. I dream vividly every single night and remember them – kinda weird. I then feel the need to share them with anyone who will listen.

20. I run for my sanity (often stopping to email or text).

21. I love the app Melissa Wood Health for a daily dose of zen and a stretch for “long, lean lines.”

29. Nickname in college was Last Minute Marks (Melissa Marks). My VERY patient, loving parents can attest.

30. I believe that being late just means you are optimistic you can get more done.

31. I’ve accepted my dichotomy: super chill type B person masquerading as type A.

32. If you want something done, give it to a busy person.

33. I live by my running to do list – electronic & paper (preferably on backs of envelopes and discarded print designs).

34. I only like the beach at sunrise or dusk.

37. I was overwhelmed by my daughter’s college applications (and she is now at Tulane, my alma mater).

39. I don’t read physical books. I’d sooner write a book (love writing). I do enjoy audio books on long car rides, mostly business or autobiographies.

40. My first job out of college was at a start up gourmet foods company working for a young entrepreneur, Daniel Lubetzky (founder of KIND Bars). I attribute my grit and scrappiness to those early experiences where we had no fear in asking for anything we wanted.

41. I believe that worry is a wasted emotion. I try not to worry. Action is my love language.

42. I’m not so social on social media but am determined to connect more! Follow along @swtorgilde as I start to share more behind-the-scenes & takeovers.

43. I wear my grandfather’s wedding band on my middle finger (sorry g-pa) and my grandmother’s rings on the ring finger next to it every day to remember my two favorite people together as my right hand in everything.

44. I’m always freezing cold (but a warm person I like to think).

45. My fave quote: “Toss your hair in a bun, drink some coffee, put on some gangsta rap and handle it!”

46. My favorite job (aside from Cabana) was working for Seventeen magazine – traveling with boy bands, hosting fashion shows, going on the news and signing autographs for adoring teens.

47. It's hard to choose, but one of my favorite new collections is Algarve (coming soon!)

To #escape the city life for a much slower pace, Wadmalaw Island offers a rural feel and is just under 40 minutes outside of Charleston. Pack your day bag and hit the road! Leaves are falling and cardigans are coming out. With the change of seasons, new flavors are in the air! Sweet & spicy or cool & crisp we've gathered some of our favorite autumn inspired cocktails and mocktails to suit your fall tastes. Try one (or all!) at your next dinner party.

Apple Cider Mimosa

Ingredients
For the Apple Cider Mimosas:

2 ounces brandy or dark rum
4 ounces apple cider
8 ounces chilled champagne Prosecco, or other sparkling wine
Optional: Apple slices for garnish

To Rim the Glasses:

2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon pumpkin pie spice is also tasty if you have it on hand

Additional apple cider

Directions

Rim the glasses: In a shallow bowl, stir together the sugar & cinnamon. In a separate shallow bowl, pour a few tablespoons of apple cider. Wet the edges of the glasses in the apple cider, then tap the wet edges in the cinnamon & sugar mixture to rim.
Pour 1 ounce of brandy or rum & 2 ounces apple cider in each glass. Top with 4 ounces of champagne. Enjoy immediately, garnished with apple slices as desired.

Mocktail Twist:

For a sweet sip, simply use sparkling apple juice ( or apple juice with a few dashes of sparkling water) and rim the glass as usual.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Martini

Ingredients

1/2 can of La Colombe Pumpkin Spice Latte
2 ounce Cayman Coffee Liqueur
1 ounce creamer of choice (optional)
Cinnamon sticks or coffee beans (for garnish)
Dash of Maple Syrup

Directions

Add ice, pumpkin spice latte & liqueur to shaker. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds.
Strain the chilled mixture into a martini glass.
In separate cup, combine creamer of choice with dash of maple syrup & briefly froth.
Add frothed milk to martini mixture & garnish with cinnamon stick for festive fall vibes or top with 3 coffee beans for year-round style.
Enjoy!

Mocktail Twist:

Simply swap the coffee liqueuer with an extra shot of espresso if desired for a full bodied flavorful drink.

Salted Caramel White Russian

Ingredients

1 tablespoon caramel sauce, or syrup, plus more for garnish (optional)
2 ounces Vodka
1 ounce Kahlua
1 ounce heavy whipping cream
Flaky sea salt, for garnish

Directions

In a short cocktail glass, drizzle caramel syrup around edges, then fill glass with ice.
Pour vodka & Kahlua into prepared glass.
Hold a spoon over mouth of glass, upside down. Very slowly, pour heavy cream over back of spoon so that cream slides off into glass.
Add optional garnish top of drink with more caramel sauce drizzle and flaky sea salt.
Serve as desired.

Mocktail Twist:

For alcohol free treat, keep the vodka out and swap the Kahlua for a shot of espresso for full coffee flavor.

Maple Old Fashioned

Ingredients

2 ounces Bourbon or Rye
3–4 dashes Aromatic bitters
1/2 teaspoon Maple Syrup
Orange peel
1 Maraschino Cherry (Optional)

Directions

Use a vegetable peeler or knife to carefully cut a 2- to 3-inch-long piece of orange peel. Run the pulp-side of the peel around the rim of the cocktail glass, then set the peel aside for later.
Add the bourbon, bitters & maple syrup to the glass, then briefly stir to combine. Add ice, then briefly stir the drink one more time to mix & chill.
Give the orange peel a good twist above the glass to release its oils, then tuck it into the drink. Add a maraschino cherry (optional) and serve immediately.

Mocktail Twist:

Make this classic drink with a Non-Alcoholic Bourbon like Kentucky 74 and enjoy!

Why Is Sun Protection So Important?

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation when it comes to skin cancer, a major risk factor is prolonged exposure to ultraviolet, or UV radiation. UVB & UVA rays are the two types of UV light that increase your risk of skin cancer. If you want a full breakdown of these UV rays check out our blog!

The key things to remember are UVB rays have a shorter wavelength & are associated with skin burning, while UVA rays have a longer wavelength & are associated with skin aging.

While UVB intensity fluctuates, peaking in the United States between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. between April and October, they can still harm your skin during the colder months. Also, UVB rays are constant at high altitudes or near reflective surfaces (like snow or water).

UVA accounts for up to 95% of the UV radiation reaching the earth. UVA rays are present year-round, from sunrise until sunset 365 days a year! And unlike UVB rays, UVA rays go through glass & clouds.

Why Should I Be Careful Even During Fall?

Other than year-round UV exposure, many of the things we love about Fall like the drier air, cooler temps & windy weather can contribute to skin irritation & actually increase your risk of sunburns.

Through the years our trend setting styles have been favorites of cancer survivors, celebrities & active individuals everywhere. Recently, we celebrated our move to our new office with our FIRST-EVER Sample Sale!

These samples are special pieces of our history and many are one-of-a-kind! Come with us through a history of our most iconic Cabana Classics and our exciting plans ahead!

Colors, prints, and patterns, OH MY! Old and new, our racks were covered in whirls of vibrant styles just waiting to be seen. Can you spot your favorite print here?

As soon as the doors opened everyone was greeted with big smiles and mimosas of course! (Like the tray? Grab it quick, there's only a few left!) Melissa, our founder, loved meeting everyone and getting to hear their stories.

So many of you have been with us since the beginning! Many styles like our Santorini Sleeveless Shift Dress have became a staple part of our collections as they have been so popular since their very first launch!

Anyone who loves swtorgilde will recognize the Coral Geo Off The Shoulder Dress. This popular coral & pink peplum sleeve dream is a must have from beach to brunch! No wonder it has sold out more than 10x!

Whether shoppers were flying solo, with a crowd of girlfriends, or bringing hubby along for support, everyone was in awe at the thousands of pieces available.

Even the kiddos joined in on the fun! Hundreds of hats, swimwear, rashguards, and dresses were also available for the little ones to find pieces of their own. It was amazing to see the whole family joining us for the sale!

Did you know swtorgilde actually started as a kids brand?! We've grown quite a lot since then, but keeping your loved ones protected from the sun's harmful UV rays has always been a huge part of our mission.

When our swtorgilders finally came to check out, it was hard to stop at one or two, (even three!) hauls! Plus, right behind our team is a display of our current collection that drew loads of attention.

Leaving with bags, armfuls & smiles everyone had an amazing time. So many memories made, and so many more to come! Many of these purchases also went towards supporting the community. We partnered with local charities to donate 25% of purchases to support important causes from schools, to sea turtles, to skin cancer awareness!

UPF vs. SPF - What's the Difference?

As a sun protective clothing brand, we strive to spread awareness on the importance of protecting your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. Many people don't understand the difference between UPF & SPF and why both matter. So we're here to break it down for you!

What is SPF?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures the effectiveness of sunscreen. When shopping for sunscreen, have you wondered what exactly is the difference between each SPF number? Is getting SPF 50 actually worth it? Turns out, it is! According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, wearing SPF 30 makes it 30 times longer for your skin to burn compared to not wearing any sunscreen at all. The same applies to SPF 50! Regularly applying just SPF 15 every day can lower your chances of melanoma by 50%. Knowing this, it's important to ensure applying sunscreen is a part of your daily routine to protect your skin. Plus, sunscreen prevent signs of aging, like wrinkles & age-spots, which are caused by UV damage.

What is UPF?

As a sun protective clothing company, we have seen many women discover us looking for "spf clothing". Fun fact: SPF clothing does not actually exist! SPF specifically refers to sunscreen. Instead, UPF, which stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, measures how effectively fabric blocks UV radiation. Different types of clothing have different levels of UPF. For example, a lightweight cotton t-shirt only has UPF 5, while a denim jacket has UPF 1700! At swtorgilde, we offer stylish UPF 50+ clothing, which blocks 98% of the sun's rays, ultimately complete sun protection.

Do I need both?

You might be thinking, sunscreen is enough protection for me. However, the Skin Cancer Foundation says that you must reapply sunscreen every 2 hours & immediately after sweating or swimming in order for it to stay effective. Maintaining this every day can be a hassle! Ensure constant protection of your skin, no matter where life takes you by wearing UPF 50 styles. Plus, UPF blocks UVB & UVA rays, while many SPF's only block UVB rays (Hint: look for broad-spectrum sunscreens for total protection!). UVA rays cause skin aging while UVB rays cause skin burning.
